BERLIN – The European Union decided that all mobile phones circulating in Europe must be on USB-C by December 28, 2024.

This decision applies to all devices ranging from smartphones, tablets, headphones, portable speakers, and many other types of devices, including Apple products.

However, specifically for devices that support wireless or wireless charging, they get an exception.

As reported by Engadget, Friday (9/12/2022), EU member states have until December 28, 2023 to issue regulations on USB-C charging in their respective countries.

They should start implementing the rule one year later.

Laptop manufacturers have had a bit longer to comply with the rules. If they haven’t already, they should switch to USB-C in April 2026.

In addition, devices with support for fast charging will have the same charging speed, says the European Union.

Thus, EU citizens will be able to charge their devices at the same speed with any compatible charger.

While it may seem like the company doesn’t have much of a choice, Apple has said it will comply with the rules and put USB-C charging ports in the iPhones it sells.

Technically, Apple can’t actually adopt USB-C charging in iPhones until around 2025, but reports suggest that the company could make the switch as early as next year.

Let’s wait and see if this is actually done by the company with the bitten apple logo.

USB-C mandated on all mobile devices

Other than the mandatory USB-C port, the regulations also mandate the presence of USB Power Delivery on devices that have higher 15W charging. Hence, manufacturers will need to ensure their products support USB PD. Again, this won’t be an issue for most Android phone manufacturers but it could be a big deal for Apple.

With the law in place, Apple now has to ensure two things for its next generation iPhones. The first one is the presence of a USB-C port, and the second one is need to support USB PD. Apple’s iPhones support 20W wired charging, and as mandated by the law, it will have to comply.

However, there is a loophole that Apple can employ. The law doesn’t state anything about wireless charging. iPhones of the future can hence rely on the MagSafe wireless charging, and wireless data transfer solutions.

That said, Apple’s top executives have hinted at complying with the law lately, Rumours say that the iPhone 15 series in 2023 could switch to USB-C port, with the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus supporting USB 2.0 speeds, and the Pro variants supporting faster USB 3.2 speeds. The new iPhone SE 4 is also expected to get a USB-C port.

What remains to be seen is whether Apple modifies its iPhone 14 and iPhone 13 models with USB-C.

EU sets December 2024 deadline for USB-C wired charging on new phones

The European Union has set a firm deadline by which time manufacturers will need to adopt USB-C charging for most electronic devices sold in the region. New phones, tablets, headphones, portable speakers and many other types of devices will need to adopt that standard for wired charging as of December 28th, 2024. There’s no impact on devices that only support wireless charging.

EU member states have until December 28th, 2023 to publish regulations to govern the bloc’s directive on USB-C charging. They’ll have to start applying those rules one year later. The EU previously said the rules would come into force by the end of 2024 and it stuck to that timeline when it published the legislation in the Official Journal.

Laptop makers have a bit longer to comply with the rules, as The Verge notes. If they haven’t already done so, they’ll need to switch to USB-C by April 2026. In addition, devices with fast charging support will have the same charging speed, the EU says. As such, users will be able to charge devices at the same speed with any compatible charger.

Although it’s not like the company had much of a choice, Apple has said it will comply with the rules and put USB-C charging ports in iPhones sold in the EU (unless, that is, it were to switch to fully wireless charging). Technically, Apple wouldn’t have to adopt USB-C charging in iPhones until sometime in 2025, but reports suggest the company may make the switch as soon as next year.
